Traveling with essential oils and helpful packing tips!

My essential oils always come with me when I travel. They help me maintain good health and are essential if anything unexpected arises.

Pack the top 10 basic oils!

There are a few oils that I NEVER travel without, although I will almost always travel with more. Here are the 10 oils that I recommend you take on your next journey.

1. On Guard, Protective Blend by doTERRA. This oil is an absolute must, as it helps support our body's immune system. Since I started using essential oils as a form of self care I have improved the quality of my life and health through their incredible benefits and qualities. I would never be without this immune supporting oil in a bottle. You can use this doTERRA blend Internally as well as Topically and Aromatically.

2. Frankincense. Oh Frankie, where would we be without you you wondrous King of Oils!?  Yes, this one always comes with me. He is good for everything, from skin health and emotional support, to immune support and cellular repair. He is a mood balancer and soul support. I love to put a drop under my tongue as a daily dose to keep my immune system in check.  He's always in my bag for whenever I need or as back up in case I'm not sure what to use...he is one if nature's oldest remedies.

3. Tea Tree/Melaleuca. Ohhhh....the multi-purpose essential oil that is super cleansing for the skin and helps promote a healthy immune function. I love this oil for all of its anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties as it has the ability to help protect us against environmental and seasonal threats. It also has the amazing ability to help support our gastrointestinal health. An all-rounder essential oil that I could not live without.

4. Peppermint. Another necessary essential oil not to leave the house without. It is an amazing energy boost in the morning or when you are feeling tired. I like to place a drop in my palms and inhale it deeply when I feel fatigued or low on energy. It helps with digestive health, including stomach upsets, bloating, gas and indigestion. It is also an amazing breath freshener. It is one of the most important oils to support clear airways and easy breathing when diffused. Some of the other great things about peppermint is that it is a natural bug repellent and cooling oil - so it is great to take traveling in warmer climates.

5. DigestZen, Digestive Blend by doTERRA. Anything stomach/food/digestive related - this mumma is going to sort you out. She is full of warming spices and packs a sweat punch. She is good to have on the road for any tummy upsets or to support overall healthy digestive function. I love this oil, she calms everything right down.

6. Clary Calm, Monthly Women Blend by doTERRA. Amen. This one ladies...hands down, is divine grace incarnate during my monthly cycle. She is kind, calming and helps my hormones to balance out and clears the pain away. She helps to reduce cramps, PMS and other pains and discomforts that come up. Again, another necessity...which just goes to show, there IS an oil for everything!

7. Balance, Grounding Blend by doTERRA. That bit of calm, every now and then to keep you grounded. Balance is like the Grandfather of doTERA's blends. He is soothing to the soul and mind and always keeps you grounded and relaxed - especially through stressful situations while traveling. He's always with me whenever I'm out and about.

8. Oregano. This oil packs a mean punch to help support a healthy immune and digestive system. Oregano can contribute to better overall health and wellness, with powerful antioxidant properties and is one of the most potent and powerful essential oils of them all. It has been used for centuries in traditional health practices for its cleansing and immune-boosting properties.

9. Lemon. A simple cleansing and cleaning essential oil that no man or women should be without. Lemon is perfect to help kick-start our metabolism when added to a glass of water in the mornings. It is also good at cleansing the air and reducing bad odours. Lemon has a super fresh scent, which along with its cleansing properties means it also makes for a good cleaner. Lemon essential oil works well to clean dirty marks and grime. A good travel size cleaner that you can tuck away somewhere in the recesses of your luggage.

10. Lavender or Serenity, Restful Blend by doTERRA.  This oil you can tuck near your PJ's, because rest is vital anywhere you travel. Lavender or doTERRA's Serenity blend are perfect oils to help you relax and unwind after a long day out. They are my top picks when it comes to getting quality sleep and rest anywhere!

My top tips for packing to travel:

Tip 1. Pack 2 days in advance

* This will help you avoid feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Plus, organisation is a fantastic skill to master.

Tip 2: Down-size your luggage

* Who needs 50 pairs of undies and more than 2 books anyway. The lighter you pack, the easier it will be to get around. Wash things on the road. I like to carry some washing soap and wash things in the basin, drying it over night. My books are generally e-books, unless I take one copy that I don't mind giving away or leaving behind.

Tip 3: Pack some healthy whole-food snacks!

* These will be really handy for the plane ride as plane food is not always the most delightful, so some healthy delicious snacks can go down a treat. It's also handy for when you reach your destination, just in case.  There are a lot of health food and organics stores popping up all over, so if you manage to eat all the snacks on the plane you'll sure to be able to find a store nearby. (I've been known to do just that!)

Tip 4: Choose a backpack over a suitcase if traveling around for an extended period of time!

* Depending on how far and your chosen method of transport, a backpack can be a lot easier get around with while keeping your belongings safe and strapped to your back. Rolling a suitcase along is perfect for short trips or if you have appropriate transport organised...but if you have to walk the streets of Rome, climb a mountain, visit the outback...you might be better off strapping your luggage to your back!

Tip 5: Pack your day bag with a full day in mind

* Sometimes you might like to just spend an hour or 2 on an outing, but trust me...nothing always goes to plan. Pack a day bag with a full day in mind...you never know what distractions might come up.

Happy travels,

My favourite doTERRA Essential Oils

WANT TO KNOW MY FAVOURITE ESSENTIAL OILS?

There are so many essential oils I love using but there are a some that I just cannot go a day without using. Essential oils have become so important in my life since I begun using them for my health, my skin, my hair, and internally for immune boosting support and so much more. I could probably list so many essential oils I LOVE as they all have such amazing uses and outstanding benefits! I continue to be amazed at what you can use these amazing little vials of living wild essentials for.

1. LAVENDER: This is one of the most beautiful and useful essential oils I use. It is defiantly my lifelong favourite essential oil. I love to diffuse it around the house to make my house smell fresh and sweet. It is an amazing oil for reducing the appearance of scars, acne, chapped lips, stretch marks, dandruff, wrinkles, wounds, diaper rash, thrush and more. It can also assist with lymphatic system drainage and balancing menopausal conditions. Lavender is known to have the ability to affect the mood and can help deal with anxiety, stress, depression, crying, grief, insomnia and sleep disorders. I love diffusing it or applying it to my temples or pillow before I go to bed to help with a restful nights sleep. My all time favourite use for Lavender essential oil however, is for its amazing ability to assist with the healing of burns. I never leave the house without this essential oil and I always make sure I have spare one in the cupboard in case I run out when I least expect it.

2. LEMON: Lemon is probably the first essential oil I use when I wake up. I love to put this oil in my water! Lemon is known to help regulate blood pressure, assist with constipation and sluggish digestion, kidney stones, lymphatic cleansing, pancreatitis, and purification of the body. Lemon is also great to help with cold sores, colds and flus, throat infections, tonsillitis and can also help reduce the appearance of varicose veins, balance skin tones, reduce hangovers and so much more! I love this oil and never go a day without it!

3. FRANKINCENSE: Frankincense has many anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antidepressent properties which makes it a highly sought after essential oil. When in doubt I always use Frankincense as it is such a powerful essential oil. It can help with arthritis, brain health or injuries, cancer, coma’s, concussion, depression, immune system support, infected wounds, mental fatigue, parkinson’s disease, postpartum depression, lipoma tumours, wrinkles and so much more. I have used frankincense in the past on a really bad wound infection on my hand that had spread to the other side of my hand. Within a few hours of continuously applying this oil the infection was gone. This oil saved me from taking antibiotics which in the past have thrown my digestive system off balance and left me constipated for months! I always have this oil handy, as you never know when you are going to need it.

4. GERANIUM: This is my go to oil for all round skin health. I love to add this to clay masks, my facial moisturisers, cleaners, baths, skin scrubs and lotions. The primary benefits for geranium essential oil includes, autism, breasts (soothes), bruises, cancer, broken capillaries, stress, gallbladder stones, dry hair, insomnia, jet lag, low libido,  osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, pancreas support, PMS, post labour, rheumatoid arthritis, dry skin and wrinkles. I love this oil! It has the most incredible smell, if you haven’t used geranium before I suggest you try it out. You will never look back, it is incredibly useful for so many things!

5: ON GUARD, PROTECTIVE BLEND: This blend of essential oils has strong abilities to fight against harmful bacteria, mould, and viruses. It is antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral. This protective blend can help with bladder infections, candida overgrowth, chronic fatigue, cold sores, colds, coughs, the flu, gum disease, infections, lupus, pneumonia, warts and more! Every time I get sick (which isn’t that often) this is the first oil I turn to i and each time I have used it I have witnessed its amazing ability to help fight bacterial and viral infections. This oil is always in my medicine cabinet and in my bag when I leave the house. I can’t be found without this oil, I never know when I am going to need to protect myself from someone else who has a cold or flu. I love to take this oil internally as well as a great immune boosting support.

6: SERENITY, CALMING BLEND:  Who else needs a bit of serenity in their life? I love my calming blend essential oil. I keep this one on my bedside table.  I love to apply this oil to my temples before bed and diffuse it in my diffuser. This blend of essential oils helps to calm and soothe the feelings of stress, excitement, and anxiety, helping to assist the body in maintaining its natural state of health. Serenity is great for ADD/ADHD, anxiety, calming the emotions, hyperactivity, insomnia, mental fatigue, mood swings, sleep, stress and tension. Everyone needs a bit of serenity in their life. I wish I could give a bottle of this oil to everyone!

Sleep better with lavender essential oil

As a young girl, I was always familiar with the scent of lavender. My grandma and mum would always be planting lavender in our garden and drying small bunches around the house. It quickly became my favourite scented flower. I remember picking the lavender flowers from the garden and rubbing them into my hands, just so I could breathe in its beautiful calming scent it left on my hands.

Lavender has been used for centuries for its beautiful aroma and endless therapeutic benefits. Lavender is known to calm and soothe the mind and body. It is also frequently used to soothe skin irritations and help skin recover quickly, such as burns. When you apply lavender to the back of your neck and to your temples it will help reduce muscle tension and when you inhale this aroma it helps put your body into a state of relaxation and promotes a restful nights sleep.

Because lavender is such a versatile essential oil, it is definitely one I always have on hand at all times.

HOW TO USE LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL BEFORE BED:

  1. Apply a few drops to the bottoms of your feet before you go to bed
  2. Rub a drop into each temple
  3. Rub a few drops behind back of neck
  4. Diffuse lavender next to your bed at night
  5. In a 50ml glass spray bottle mix 20 drops of lavender to 40ml of pure water and spray a little on your pillow before bed.
  6. Put a few drops in the palms of your hand and cup your hands to your nose and inhale the aroma.
